DIRECTOR OF THE SADC-GROUNDWATER MANAGEMENT INSTITUTE

The SADC Groundwater Management Institute (SADC-GMI) is a newly established regional center of excellence on groundwater hosted by the University of the Free State in Bloemfontein, South Africa on behalf of and under the strategic guidance of the SADC Secretariat, Directorate of Infrastructure and Services - Water Division, in Gaborone, Botswana.
The vision of the SADC-GMI is to ensure the equitable and sustainable use and protection of groundwater, as well as being a center of excellence in the areas of groundwater management and management of groundwater dependent ecosystems in the region. The role of the GMI will be to:
  • Promote sustainable groundwater management and solutions to groundwater challenges in the SADC region through building capacity, providing training, advancing research, supporting infrastructure development, and enabling dialogue and exchange of groundwater information.
  • Conduct and support SADC Member States in groundwater research, and serve as a focal interlocutor with national, regional and international groundwater initiatives.
SADC GMI is established as a not-for-profit company under South African law and a business plan was prepared as part of the establishment process and outlines the task, responsibilities and long term development plan of the Institute. For the coming 5 years the SADC-GMI will act as the implementing agency of the Sustainable Groundwater Management in SADC Member States Project funded by the World Bank (through the support of the Global Environment Facility and the Cooperation in International Waters in Africa trust fund). During this period the SADC-GMI is expected to secure long term funding to become a sustainable center of excellence and groundwater expertise in the region providing research, training and advice to public and private sector clients.
The SADC-GMI is guided and supervised by a Board of Directors with representatives of the SADC Secretariat, SADC Member States and the University of the Free State.
The Board of Directors of SADC GMI hereby invites applications from suitably qualified candidates to fulfill the position of:
Director of the SADC-GMI
Key Responsibilities
  • Provide leadership, vision and operational management for the SADC-GMI
  • Lead the strategic and effective partnership with the hosting entity, the University of the Free State
  • Drive the functional and organizational development of the SADC-GMI
  • Develop and maintain the relationships with the SADC Secretariat and SADC Member States representatives (through SADC Subcommittee on Hydrogeology)
  • Manage the activities of the SADC-GMI and provide internal leadership
  • It will be the task of the director to appoint the SADC-GMI team in consultation with the board of directors.
  • Plan and implement the Sustainable Groundwater Management Project in SADC Member States
  • Act as a custodian of the corporate governance for the SADC-GMI
  • Develop the SADC-GMI brand and its public image as center of excellence and SADC institution
  • Manage the organizational and individual performance of SADC-GMI staff
  • Raise funds for long term SADC-GMI operational and program activities so that SADC-GMI will be financially self-sustainable after the initial five year term.
  • Manage the finances of the GMI
Required qualifications and experience:
  • A minimum of Master's Degree from a recognized institution in institutional and business management, water related field or other relevant field
  • At least 15 years' of work experience, of which 10 years is progressive experience in management at international level
  • Experience in working in similar fields in the SADC region will be an added advantage
  • Personifying an agency that enables cooperation at national, regional and international levels
  • Proven experience in operationalizing institutions, including management of staff and Programme
  • Performance, strategic and business planning and sustainable financial management and fund raising
  • Experience in working in both a development and a research organization will be an added advantage
Personal Attributes
  • National of one of the SADC Member States will have an added advantage
  • Fluency in English is required and working knowledge of Portuguese or French will be an advantage
  • Shares knowledge and experience and is a good communicator and facilitator
  • Approaches work with energy and a positive, constructive attitude
  • Is willing to travel frequently as required by the job and to support the SADC Secretariat and
    Member States
  • Demonstrates evidence of the following: critical thinking and problem solving, planning and organization, decision making, communication skills, negotiation skills, multicultural sensitivity and delegation

Job Purpose

Key responsibilities
  • Directs activities of preschool, day care center, or other child development facility to provide instruction and care for children:

Minimum Requirements
  • A Degree in Early Childhood Education
  • Bachelor s Degree an added advantage
  • A minimum of 3 – 4 years of professional early childhood education teaching experience
  • At least 2 years’ hands on experience in managing day to day operations of a kindergarten school, preferably having served in a senior position
  • Proven track record in managing a kindergarten school
Knowledge and attributes
  • Demonstrated knowledge of developmentally appropriate curriculum practice for 4 and 5 year old children
  • Demonstrated flexibility, adaptability and openness to new ideas in education practices, particularly related to Kindergarten Prep curriculum and materials

Land Conservation Director
AWF has an excellent career opportunity for a high performing Land Conservation Director (LCD) with practical on-the-ground experience conserving and managing land in Africa .
This position will lead AWF’s land and habitat conservation program.
The LCD will report to the Vice President for Conservation Strategy, and work to increase the amount of land under conservation and to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of management systems for conservation land in Africa.
Responsibilities
  • Help AWF increase conservation land through the establishment of conservation areas.
  • Determine which tools/approaches will best facilitate effective and sustainable conservation for targeted landscapes. Provide technical oversight and adaptive management strategies to ensure the effective and timely implementation of recommended tools/approaches.
  • Establish AWF’s tools and systems around management of conservation properties across a variety of land uses, such as wildlife conservancies, protected areas, livestock and wildlife ranches.
  • Oversee the recruitment and supervision property managers for conservation properties managed directly by AWF.
  • Work with partners to ensure effective and efficient conservation management and ensure proper management systems are in place for other conservation properties of interest to AWF but not managed directly by AWF.
  • Represent AWF in relevant forums and meetings regarding land conservation issues, and provide support toward influencing land related policies.
  • Increase AWF’s institutional knowledge of land protection and management strategies, approaches and challenges across East, West, and Southern Africa.
  • Formulate AWF positions on various land-related matters.
  • Provide technical land management and conservation input to fundraising proposals as requested.
Qualifications
  • MSc, JD or PhD in natural resource management, law, business or other field related to land conservation.
  • 8+ years of direct experience in land conservation in Africa.
  • Experience overseeing management of a conservancy, conservation ranch or other relevant conservation land.
  • Experience negotiating land transactions for conservation purposes
  • Experience working with landowners, communities and private sector operators.
  • Experience implementing a portfolio of projects, ensuring timely, efficient and successful implementation.
  • Familiarity with land policies, and trends in land issues in Africa and successful experience with various land conservation mechanisms, such as leases, land use plans, conservancies.
  • Proficiency in both English (spoken and written) is required, French is a plus.
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills including the ability to work with a variety of landowners, build coalitions, negotiate, and manage conflict.
  • Ability to produce well written reports, legal documents and agreements. Ability to creatively solve problems.

General Management
·         Contribute to the strategic direction of the Agency.

·         Ensure that all projects meet the desired Exp. standard of quality and Brand Experience offering.
Financial Management
·         Maintain familiarity with the Agency’s standard Terms and Conditions of Business.
·         Ensure the financial policies are followed and adhered to by the account team at all times.
·         Develop cost estimates with each participating country – ensuring consistency across all project elements.
·         Ensure budgets are approved and agreed with clients before work begins.  Revise as necessary.
1.     Ensure PO’s are received from client before work commences.
2.     Ensure payment terms are agreed with client before work commences.
3.     Sign off all sales invoices before they are sent to client.
·         Ensure that all projects are within budget and meet the agreed profit margin.
1.     Manage project GP throughout the project and report financial results to the Regional Director on a regular basis.
·         Maximise the profitability of the Project:
1.     Streamlining processes.
2.     Widen project margin thru effective ops management – not reducing quality output.
·         Monitor billings (billings schedule) on a regular basis to:
1.     Monitor income versus target
2.     Revise the annual income projection each month and share with in-country management to assist with their cash flow management.
3.     Report these figures to the regional director on a monthly basis.
·         Ensure that debts are collected as per agreed payment terms.
1.     Exp policy is to not let a debtor exceed 45 days.
2.     Upfront payments are needed to ensure working capital for the projects.
·         Develop a comprehensive understanding of the agency’s terms and conditions of procurement and ensure that they are followed.
·         Produce an annual business plan (including finances) for your Business Unit, identifying opportunities and KPI’s to grow the business.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:
·         Excellent understanding of marketing communications – able to specialize in experiential marketing and / or sponsorship marketing.
·         Excellent presentation and communication skills at a senior level.
