Recruitment of Programme Coordination Unit Staff
Background:
The Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock & Fisheries, State Department of Agriculture, is rolling out the Kenya Cereals Enhancement Programme (KCEP) whose objective is to contribute to National Food Security.
The programme is funded by European Union through IFAD.
The Ministry wishes to recruit competent and qualified persons to the following position:
Agribusiness Officer (ABO)
2 Posts – Nakuru and Siakago Town
Ref. ABO12N or ABO12S
The Agribusiness Officer will report to the VCS, there will be one ABO each in Nakuru and Siakago Town, focussing on the Maize and Sorghum/Millet value chain respectively.
Their responsibilities are similar to those of the VCS within their respective sub-units.
Duties and Responsibilities include:-
  • Guiding service providers on the identification, planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of value chain support activities, including the promotion of entrepreneurial skills in farmers’ organisations;
  • Facilitating linkages and contracts between business model stakeholders including distributors, local promoters and farmers;
  • Ensuring adequate synergies between Post Harvest Management and Market Linkages and Financial inclusion of the programme, in collaboration with the Financial Services Expert;
  • Monitoring the development of innovative business models in collaboration with the Knowledge Management Communication and visibility Officer and the Planning and Monitoring and Evaluation Officer to ensure related knowledge management is included in the identification of policy lessons.
  • Participating in developing the Programme Learning System in collaboration with the Knowledge Management Communication and visibility Officer;
  • Preparing and implementing the various studies planned in the value chain studies; and;
  • Participating in preparation of the AWPB and progress reports.
For appointment to this position, applicants must have:-
  • Bachelor’s degree in either Agriculture, Agribusiness, Rural Development or any other relevant/equivalent field from a recognized institution. A post graduate qualification in a relevant field will be an added advantage;
  • Eight (4) years working experience in a similar field, three (2) of which must have been in a senior management position;
  • Demonstrated experience in facilitating value chain development, value chain analysis and in building capacity of value chain actors;
  • Knowledge of technologies and issues for value chain development, business development, and rural livelihoods;
  • Strong computer, report writing and communications skills (oral, written, presentation); and
  • Experience in preparation of project proposal.

Job Purpose:
  • To work with a Women Group (and a focal group of Alemun Pastoralists Empowerment Initiative, APEI) team to successfully implement a Poultry Enterprise Expansion and business support component in order to establish and support a viable and sustainable group businesses managed by a Self Help Women Group.
  • Then ultimately, the Women group are expected to create wealth opportunities to increase household food and income security.
  • She/he has to perform technical grading/inspections on poultry/poultry products to determine appropriate KBS grades and quality.
  • Duties include monitoring commercial and government specifications to ensure farm compliance with formulation and processing standards as specified by various processing contracts; ensuring maintenance of sanitation standards; trains and monitors the work of authorized farm workers; and signing off on all documentation that pertains to grading and inspection functions.
Dimensions:
  • Set up effective Marketing strategies for Poultry Enterprise venture.
  • He/she will be expected to produce well organized, reports and/or records with accurate information, put together independently with only general guidance.
  • Monitoring, evaluation and give appropriate advisory on Enterprise daily routine activities.
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Identify and strategize the markets for enterprise products.
  • Supervise the daily routine management of Farm routine activities e.g feeding, vaccination, eggs collection etc.
  • Advice on procurement of farm inputs e.g. Chicks, Feeds, equipment etc.
  • Supervise the poultry attendants.
  • Compiling farm daily reports and submits to the Business Manager.
  • Provide the technical assistance to farm workers/management on poultry activities carried out on the farm.
  • Ensures proper sanitation is maintained in the farm.
  • Training the beneficiaries on poultry management skills.
Skills and Competence:
  • At least a Diploma in Animal Production from Kenya AHITI or University.
  • Working knowledge of the poultry industry, poultry processing techniques, marketing strategies, grading standards.
  • Effective customer service, oral and written communication, organizational, and computer skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with farm management and agency supervisory personnel; to work with limited supervision; and to train and monitor farm personnel.
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret and apply regulations. Prior work experience or background in poultry production, processing, or grading and in working with limited supervision.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Coursework in poultry science or related field; knowledge of Kenya Poultry Grading Standards and Regulations; and work experience directly related to the Poultry management.
  • An equivalent combination of training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge and abilities may substitute for this education and experience.

Job Summary: The Agribusiness Officer will majorly be charged with the responsibility of improving the economic future and quality of life of their program beneficiaries. The ability of the Agribusiness Officer to push forward market-driven approaches in all stages of programming will be one of the position’s three success factors.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Conduct market assessments, value chain analyses, and the development of sector-focused strategies;
  • Recommend program priorities and explore, evaluate and present new opportunities that with high potential for impact
  • Introduce the program to relevant stakeholders including local business owners, local representatives and community members
  • Ensure an integrated approach to program implementation
  • Establish and maintain productive working relationships with sub-county and district leaders
  • Make on-site field visits regularly to provide technical review and/or design suggestions

About AFAAS: 
The African Forum for Agricultural Advisory Services (AFAAS) is the umbrella organisation for Agricultural Extension and Advisory Services (AEAS) in Africa. Its objective is to create efficient, effective and synergistic linkages and partnerships between AEAS of member countries to improve the delivery of these services to farmers. It operates within the framework of the Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Programme (CAADP), specifically CAADP Pillar IV which has the objective of enhancing the livelihoods of African farmers and pastoralists. The Forum for Agricultural Research in Africa (FARA) has been mandated to lead the implementation of CAADP Pillar 4 and it’s in this context that AFAAS has strong collaboration with FARA and the Sub Regional Research Organisations (SROs).

Key Duties and Responsibilities:  
  • Periodically update and implement AFAAS’s communication and social media strategy i.e. produce and disseminate public awareness materials such as case studies, policy papers targeted at development partners and policy makers;
  • Build on the AFAAS communication strategy to develop media relationship i.e. relating with International and African Press Agencies to disseminate AFAAS important news or events such as the Africa Wide agricultural Extension Week, symposia held biennially and; drafting press releases, and opinion pieces on agricultural extension and Advisory services ( AEAS) issues in Africa;
  • Contribute to the regular updates of AFAAS information and communication tools
  • Contribute to the production of AFAAS quarterly and annual reports, and lead the publication of reports in soft and hard copies;
  • Offer support to regional nodes, Country Fora and AEASstakeholders to effectively integrate into communications processes in order to harmonise actions at global, regional and national levels;
  • Design, develop, produce and distribute audience specific English, French Portuguese and Arabic AFAAS key messages and results and manage promotional launches for key initiatives and publications in AEAS in partnership with the regional organisations/ bodies;
  • Package organisational and programme achievements and success stories for information sharing to aid resource mobilisation efforts;
  • Monitor events, opportunities or developments relevant to Africa’s agricultural development at the global, continental, sub regional and national level;
  • Coordinate AFAAS’s response to requests for information in a timely, cost effective and appropriate manner on various issues raised by AFAAS Stakeholders;
  • Design media strategies to increase the visibility of AFAAS and its members and to position AFAAS to better influence the AEAS agenda;
  • Support the internal communication and information flow, define activities aimed to facilitate information and knowledge sharingamong AFAAS’s diverse constituency and act as AFAAS Public relations officer and spokes person;
  • Develop and strengthen AFAAS guidelines and templates; advise on issues related to branding, use of the AFAAS logo, copyright, editorial/style norms, and other topics;
  • Offer technical support in supervising Knowledge Management and communications consultants, including writers, editors, translators, proof readers, designers, and web masters, including partnerships in communication;
  • Steer the development and use of AFAAS websites, social media and multimedia tools and supervise the maintenance and expansion of AFAAS websites and the intranet and ensure regular content updates; and innovative use of web tools;
  • Perform any other duties as might be assigned by AFAAS Management from time to time.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:  
  • The applicant should hold a relevant Master’s degree or equivalent degree in development communications and communication management or other relevant qualification;
  • Prior international experience in developing countries and particularly in Africa and in agricultural issues with focus to agricultural development;
  • At least seven years experience with an outstanding record of achievement in information and communication and knowledge management,
  • Excellent scientific writing skills in French and English and ability to make presentations and write well under pressure and a commitment to meeting deadlines
  • Knowledgeable and experience in managing of social media tools;
  • Fluency in French and English, both oral and written, being bilingual shall be an added advantage;
  • Possess the ability to present AFAAS activities at public fora and serving as a spokesperson;
  • Ability to work effectively in a multi-cultural environment;
  • Should have a stronger experience on political economy issues, in Agricultural research and development transformation in Africa.

Sanergy Agricultural Products Certifications Specialist Job in Kenya


About Us: Sanergy is an award-winning social venture that is creating new organic agricultural inputs that will reverse the trend of declining harvests and increasing prices for farmers.
We are preparing to launch our first agricultural input, a locally produced, high-quality organic fertilizer.
 
Role Description: Sanergy is looking for an Agricultural Products Certifications Specialist responsible for managing the process of applying for certifications from requisite government and
industry regulatory bodies both in Kenya and internationally such as the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS), Pest Control Products Board (PCPB), and Kenya Plant Health Inspectorate Services (KEPHIS).
We are looking for someone who has adept experience with organic fertilizers and who understands the technical composition of our product and associated benefits.
This person will also have experience working with regulatory bodies and will have previously received certifications for new products successfully and expediently.
Beyond obtaining certifications from the regulatory bodies listed above, this person will lead the process of obtaining certifications from other agencies focused on organic farming inputs such as En-Cert and Kenyan GAP.
This position requires a self-starter who is able to execute with a high degree of autonomy.
This role can be part-time or engaged on a consultancy basis.
 
Responsibilities
·         Achieve regulatory certifications from government and industry bodies for new agricultural products
·         Develop and manage research trials in the field, matching client requirements with trial sites and planning, preparing, marking out and organising trials at suitable sites on farms
·         Organise and interpret product tests of Sanergy agricultural products
·         Organise and interpret soil tests
·         Work with Sanergy teams to ensure compliance to all industry standards and internal quality systems, maintaining confidentiality and protocols
·         Develop relationships with regulatory agencies to ensure good standing
·         Generate data and meet deadlines, and analyse, write and present reports
·         Suggest improvements to support the development of business efficiencies
Requirements
·         Bachelors or Masters degree in Agronomy or closely related field or equivalent with minimum of 2 years experience
·         Demonstrated ability to design and conduct field trials of agricultural inputs across multiple crop and soil types that will support marketing efforts with accurate and relevant observations and evaluations, while managing costs and staff.
·         Experience working with standards and certification agencies such as KEBS, KEPHIS, Ministry of Agriculture, En-Cert, UTZ, Kenyan GAP etc.
·         A self-starter and critical thinker with attention to detail, ability to multi-task, and work with a high-degree of autonomy
·         Strong communication skills – verbal, written, and computer
·         Willingness to work in a variety of conditions including field and office
