UN Internships - Programme Management - Urban Planning and Design Branch

Responsibilities
Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual's background; the intern's assigned office as well as the internship period.
Under the supervision of the Leader of the Climate Change Planning Unit (CCPU), carry out the following duties:
  • Review introductory materials on the Climate Change Planning Unit, including previous Cities and Climate Change Initiative (CCCI) newsletters and the project document with logical framework. Review the mid-term evaluation as well as other relevant project documents.
  • Assist in preparation of the CCPU annual planning and budgeting exercise and other internal planning and monitoring processes.
  • Assist in planning, preparing and implementing CCPU related events according to individual professional interest and need determined by supervisor.
  • Assist in planning and implementing CCPU related projects according to individual professional background and special interest.
  • Prepare one or more articles, according to professional interest, for the CCCI quarterly newsletter and other relevant publications by the Unit.
  • Review CCPU experience to date in sharing knowledge in peer reviewed academic journals. Review and revive a previous effort to develop a ‘pipeline’ of article topics and help stimulate the preparation of articles by UN-Habitat colleagues, and/or the sharing of information on CCCI with external researchers.
  • Support the implementation of specific recommendations arising from CCCI’s mid-term evaluation.
  • Other tasks relevant to CCCI as the need arises
    Education
  • Applicants must be enrolled in at least the third year of a first university degree program or in a graduate school (second university degree or higher) program at the time of application, commencement and during the internship.
  • Be computer literate in standard software applications;
  • Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and
  • Have a demonstrated the ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
  • Currently pursuing an advanced degree in Urban or Land-use Planning or related topic (Master or PhD candidate preferable).
    Work Experience
  • Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme.
    Languages
  • English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the internship, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of a second official UN language is desirable.
