Systems Administrator-Uganda Jobs

Job Summary: The Systems Administrator will be primarily responsible for the installation/configuration, operation, maintenance of Linux & some Windows servers their hardware, software and related infrastructure monitoring and managing. The primary role is to ensure smooth running and availability of the applications on the servers. This position employs the skills of the associate to implement, maintain, and support a variety of applications and systems.
Key Duties and Responsibilities: 
  • Conduct daily systems monitoring, verifying the integrity and availability of all hardware, server resources, systems and key processes, reviewing system and application logs, and verifying completion of scheduled jobs.
  • Perform regular security monitoring to identify any possible intrusions, also enrolling users and maintaining system security.
  • Perform daily backup operations, ensuring all required file systems and system data are successfully backed up to the appropriate media, recovery tapes or disks are created, and media is recycled and sent off site as necessary.
  • Monitoring and management of OS, system hardware and applications performance.
  • Assist in upgrades of server OS.
  • Monitor and Maintain Linux and UNIX Operating System software.
  • Provide technical support to the Linux servers in a virtualized environment (Proxmox VE)
Qualifications, Skills and Experience: 
  • The Systems Administrator should possess a good bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology or a related field.
  • At least one to two years of system administration experience.
  • Possess excellent  inter-personal and communication skills
  • Ability to write basic system and user documentation.
  • Ability to work independently and resolve problems / issues;
  • High IT skill level with most Unix commands and utilities.
  • Good understanding and familiarity with most Linux system administration tools and tasks (Preferably Debian/Ubuntu).
  • Basic understanding of the functioning of the Linux operating system: understands job control, hard and soft linking, the difference between shell programs and kernel programs.
  • Possess the ability to perform most security audits, and protect the system against intrusion.
  • Familiarity with fundamental networking/distributed computing environments and concepts.
  • Can configure NFS and NIS, use nslookup or research to check information in the DNS.
  • Proficient at Windows systems administration.
  • Ability to write functional scripts in an administrative language (shell, Perl, Tk)
